What is memory?
Based on what I learnt in class, memory is the retention of information over (Santrock, 2011) or the mind stores and remember information (mental processes/cognition), like computer software.
While, brain is the organ, like computer hardware.
When we learn something new and remember it,our brain will encode and store the memory whether in short-term memory files or long-term memory files. Our brain work like a computer but much more greater than that. (Subhanallah,Allah's creation is amazing and it is beyond our imagination)
Next,I will share with you how our brain works regarding memory system.
The best way to remember what we learnt is by teaching others.Trust me,it is 100% true.Allah has promise us "By sharing what you have learnt, you will gain thousand more knowledge than that".
Our brain works almost the same as computer.
- Encoding/input:
(Computer ⇢ keyboard camera;
Human ⇢ the five senses;ears,mouth,nose,skin,eyes) - Storage(Computer ⇢ hard disk,thumb drive;
Human ⇢ 3 types memory-SM,STM,LTM) - Retrieval/output:(Computer ⇢ computer screen
Human ⇢ writing,talking)
| MEMORY DURATION |
It is a simple process.
1.Receive sensory information ⇾ not important ⇾ the information will be gone immediately (short memory)
2.Gain knowledge ⇾ important ⇾ only recite it a few times for important occasion ⇾ Did not revise it afterward ⇾ the information will be gone (short-term memory)
3.Gain knowledge ⇾ important ⇾ review it many times ⇾ do some revision about it numerous time ⇾ the information will be remembered for a long time (long-term memory)
Let's do some activities related to this topic!
First activity is:
1.Receive sensory information ⇾ not important ⇾ the information will be gone immediately (short memory)
2.Gain knowledge ⇾ important ⇾ only recite it a few times for important occasion ⇾ Did not revise it afterward ⇾ the information will be gone (short-term memory)
3.Gain knowledge ⇾ important ⇾ review it many times ⇾ do some revision about it numerous time ⇾ the information will be remembered for a long time (long-term memory)
Let's do some activities related to this topic!
First activity is:
One point will be given for answering "YES" .The higher the points you get means you have succeed using many memory strategies!
Next:
Look at the following list of words for 30 seconds and remember it then cover it with your hand or a piece of paper and try to write the words in the margin.

Look at the following list of words for 30 seconds and remember it then cover it with your hand or a piece of paper and try to write the words in the margin.
My result is 7/10😂😂. I wrote
- Beard
- Band
- Edge
- Date
- Object
- Secret
- Jacket
MEMORY STRATEGIES
- Make sure you take a break between your study session to allow all of your new memory processing properly.Well, our brain is not a computer, give it a rest first before continuing your study.
- Break reading material down. Please,do not study every chapter for one day only...You will get stress/headache.Take a break for a while.
- If you want to remember for a long time, repeat the information many times. (5 times or 10 times)
- Elaboration strategies: associations, acronyms, acrostics, imagery, organizational strategies and comprehension monitoring strategies.
- Story method: By learning in a story tone/ways,it will be easier to remember.
- Memory place:using a checkpoint to remember routes.
- Mnemonic Peg:Associate an items with colors, numbers, shapes, alphabet, movement, sound or even sound.
- Active recall and mistakes learning:When you are correcting your mistakes and review it again,it will easier to remember.
HOW FORGETTING COULD OCCUR
⧪ Did not give your 100% concentration
⧪ Did not understand the information
⧪ Force yourself to remember everything in a short of time only
⧪ Text anxiety
⧪ Did not use good strategies
ACTIVITY 3
One point will be given for answering "YES".The higher the points you get means you have succeed using many concentration strategies!
IMPROVING CONCENTRATION STRATEGIES
One point will be given for answering "YES".The higher the points you get means you have succeed using many concentration strategies!
IMPROVING CONCENTRATION STRATEGIES
- Do motivational work such as make a goal settings.
- Make your study environment comfortable
- Deal with external distraction (switch off your phone or settle your personal problems first)
- Use active learning styles
- Monitor your concentration
- Lack of interest
- Lack of motivation

- Uncomfortable environmentACTIVITY 4
READING/STUDY EFFICIENTLY BY USING SYSTEM (SQ3R)
What is SQ3R?SURVEY-QUESTION-READ-RECITE-REVIEWSQ3R is a comprehension strategy that make student think about the text while they are reading.Other than that, using study system can help in comprehending reading academic materials due to three factors:↠active learning strategies↠use of multisensory methods (eyes, ears, mouth, hands)↠immediate steps for self-testing and review
1.SURVEYStudents thoroughly review the content in a text such as title, charts, graphs, picture or chapter introduction.2.QUESTIONStudent try to form a question based on the text they reading thoroughly just now.3.READWhile the students read the text, they will try to find the answer to the question they formed just now. This will make the student become more focus while reading the text.
4.RECITEIf student could not answer the question they formed, they will go back and reading it again.Student should rehearse, recite and makes a notes beside the text about the answer to their question for later studying.5.REVIEWAfter you have finished your reading, read all the text again and your answer.Try to recall it back. This part is to test yourself.
